Miss:

I fear we shall not be able to furnish a teacher for Laurel this season; and we cannot transfer you to another place without good reasons.

We want to have the school at Sandy Springs go on. This lady who has come to your place will not interfere with you. She proposed to go out and attend your school as one of your pupils, and pay her own board. We told her when you wrote that the people wanted a night school, and your health would not admit of your attending to it, that she might teach it, and that perhaps the people might board her for these services; but she expects no aid from any Society or from the Bureau.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swain,
Bvt. Maj. U.S.A., A.D.C., and Act. Supt. Ed.

Yours received. We have not heard from [[underlined]] George Payne [[/underlined]] since he called here with his brother. He was furnished with school register and blanks and instructed how to proceed to Fairfield. I will write you as soon as we can hear from the place.

Dear Sir:

You state that you will be compelled to resign at the end of the year on account of your health. Do you mean to have it take effect on the 1st of Jan. or the 1st of July. In speaking of the end of the school year we mean the latter date. Hope you will continue till then if possible.

Please write me another order for the books, and state in whose care you want them left at Smith's Point. Please write me another order for the books and state in whose care you want them left at Smith's Point. We sent some books to [[underlined]] Cephas L. Davis [[/underlined]] last summer, who was then teaching your school, and the parcel was lost. I wish you would try to ascertain what became of them. When I get your order I will give it to Mr. [[underlined]] Ballantyne. [[/underlined]] He will send the books according to your instructions, and at your risk. He will hold me responsible for the bill, which I shall pay, and deduct the amount from your salary. I enclose Check for $9 98/100, the amount due you for the time you taught last month.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swain,
Bvt. Maj. U.S.A., A.D.C., and Act. Supt. Ed.

P.S. Please sign enclosed receipt and return.
