[[underlined]] Davis Mr. Curtis. [[/underlined]]
Baltimore, Md.

Dear Sir:

I wrote to a young man last week, who had applied to teach one of the Maryland schools, to go to Federalsburg, but learn that he has been appointed by a New York Society to another place. Most of the Societies by whom our teachers salaries are paid are nearly exhausted, and think they have as many teachers in the field as they are able to support, and we fear that the people in some localities where schools are needed will be disappointed. We are making efforts, however, to secure more teachers, and will if possible, send one to Federalsburg sometime during winter.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swain,
Bvt. Maj. U.S.A., A.D.C., and Act. Supt. Ed.

Dear Sir:

Yours received. When we wrote you sometime since offering to send teachers to Centerville and Salem on certain conditions, we had good reasons for believing that we should be able to furnish teachers for all the places in Maryland where the colored people were willing to comply with the terms, I wrote you. But most of the Societies on whom we depended for teachers, and by whom their salaries are in part paid, think they have as many already in the field as they are able to support. There are still several places in the State that we are anxious to supply and we are making efforts to secure more teachers, but we cannot promise any more at present.
