Dear Sir:

[[underlined]] Rev. E. F. Hatfield [[/underlined]] wrote me some time since that he had appointed you to teach at Hancock. I replied that we had engaged that school to a lady teacher, and requested him to locate you at Pleasant Valley. He writes me to-day that he has instructed you to go to the latter place. We have just learned that this lady will not go there, and if you are still at the place, and think the prospects are fair for a good school &c., you can remain. If not, we can now offer you the school at Clear Spring, which we think will suit you better than Pleasant Valley. To reach the former place you must go to Hagerstown and take stage. Please write me immediately.

Very respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swaim,

New York City.

Dear Sir:

We have never had a school at Ellicott City, and know but little about the place, but our agent informed us last year that a large school could be gathered there and recommended that a teacher be sent them. If Mr. [[underlined]] Green [[/underlined]] can furnish a satisfactory report, I think it would be well to appoint him for the place. [[blotted out word]] I will see that the blanks reports &c. are sent you to day, and will make out a schedule of schools as soon as possible, i.e., as the teachers reports are received. Has not your rental a/c been settled for the quarter ending Sept. 30th

Hope you will send the man at Princetown to Federalsburg. If he goes please request him to report to me as soon as he arrives. Mr. [[underlined]] Wm. H. Still, [[/underlined]] at Brooklyn requests an advance of half a month's salary. When he was here I loaned him $3.00 and he gave me in order for the amount on you which I enclose. When you pay him please deduct this.

Very respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swaim,
Bvt. Maj. U.S.A., A.D.C., and Act. Supt. Ed.

Dear Sir:

Yours received. Please state how you want the books sent, and be particular about the directions, in whose care you want them left &c. Mr. Ballantyne will fill your order and send the parcel according to your instructions, and at your risk. He will hold me responsible for the bill which I shall pay, and deduct the amount from your salary.

In address to letter to Hatfield at top of page 2, New York appears hyphenated to me (and I know that it was sometimes written this way). -- Beth
