for teaching a school of this size. Mr. [[underlined]] Gaines [[/underlined]] who teaches in your vicinity, writes us that the people promise to send their children to your school after Christmas.

Now we want you to have the trustees call a school meeting and get the people to decide what they will do at once. You can tell them if they will have the chimney put up before the first of January, and will send their children, you can remain. If not we shall send them no more teachers nor do anything more for them.

If you cannot get them sufficiently interested to start the school, we want you to report to this office if you have to come on foot, and and we may be able to locate you at another [[rubbed out]] school near here. We can advance you no more money at present.

Very respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swaim,
Bvt. Maj. U.S.A., A.D.C.,
and Act. Supt. Education.

Dear Sir:

Yours received. We should be glad to aid in procuring your salary for teaching the school mentioned, but the Northern Societies, on which we depend for paying teachers, think they have as many already in the field as they are able to support, and are not appointing any more at present.

Very respectfully, Yours,

Miss:

If [[underlined]] Col. Corson [[/underlined]] is willing to employ you as one of the teachers of his Society we should be glad to have you take the school at Spencerville providing they have good school accommodations at that place, and you were sure of gathering, at least thirty pupils. We know but little about this place, but we have other schools where teachers are needed.

We answered your letter, when you informed us of your disappointment in getting the school with directions how to proceed &c., but received no reply.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
D. G. Swaim,
