May 5th 70

Mr. Saml. Aukard,
Barnesville, Md.

Dear Sir:
Yours of the 2d inst. is at hand. Mrs. Lowell has decided to withdraw your teacher because her school is so small. Societies cannot afford to continue teachers where they have less than thirty pupils who attend every day. Your teacher reports an average attendance of only sixteen for last month, which is but little more than half the number required.

I am sorry your school cannot be continued until the close of the term.

If you think you can get the people interested so as to send their children and gather the required number of pupils, I will try to send you another teacher sometime next month.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
W. L. Van Derlip
Bvt. Maj. & Supt. of Education
