Miss Mary Davenger,
Piscataway, Md.

Miss:
I know of no means by which I can pay you any salary unless you can gather a school with an average attendance of thirty pupils, and even then I can only allow you $10 00/ per month.

I thought you understood this before you went to Piscataway. You report an average of only 17 for last month; now unless you can secure the required number of pupils I think you had better close the school.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
W. L. Van Derlip
Bvt. Maj. & Supt. of Education
