May 17th

Mr. Saml. Aukard
Barnesville, Md.

Dear Sir:
I replied to yours of the 2d inst. by saying that I would try to send you a teacher for the summer term providing you could gather a school with an average attendance of at least thirty pupils, &c. I thought it probable at the time that I should have a large number of teachers to send out for the summer, but the prospect is not so favorable now.

Since I wrote you I have learned that your people have not only failed to send their children to school the past term, but are behind in paying the teacher's board, and I can therefore give you no encouragement to hope for a teacher at present.

Very Respectfully, Yours,
W. L. Van Derlip
Bvt. Maj. & Supt. of Education
