19^[[61]] ^[[Just opened a package that I thought was cookies turned out to be "Cocktail Danties". What in the world is the American Embassy sending me Cocktail snacks when they know I don't have and can't get Cocktails? Apparently the Maj. could not find the color of wool I need for my carpet. My cell mat [[sic]] had some but not quite enough for what I need. It was made up of 4 strands so we took one strand away and [[made?]] the extra stran [[sic]] into 1/4 more. Probably be enough. Been an odd New Year. Starting my ninth month in prison. Potatoes]]

JANUARY 2

19^[[61]] ^[[Thought today was a holiday but it wasn't. Made envelopes, took two walks, and worked some on the carpet. Received two letters. One from Joan with pictures of she and family. The other from A.P. Wilhite from Montreal Canada. An odd letter with check for $10 for smokes. From sound of news over radio my position is improving. K. wants to forget about the U-2 incident with the coming of the new American Gov. The question - can they forget about it with me still in prison? Have much hope. Potatoes for supper. Soup & noodles for lunch and porrage [[sic]] for breakfast.]]
