The drafts sent to me for funds are not available and I have to return them.

I have also requested that Money - Gold - not drafts be forwarded at once.

It is unnecessary for me to say anything on the importance of being able promptly to comply with our promises to the first Indians coming in for emigration.

Indeed not a step can be taken until the money is here

In haste

Very Respectfully
Your Obd. Servt.

Colonel,

I inclose a roll of Florida Indians going over in the [[?]] Fashion [[/?]] to N. Orleans barracks under charge of Major Holmes

They will be rationed by the Subs. Depart. and issue the following articles. viz..

Corn, Flour, Rice, Pork or Bacon. F. Beef. Molasses, Soap, Salt.

They rarely use but half rations of salt meat. and but half rations of Soap & Salt.

Issue extra quantities of F. Beef and let the ration of rice [[underlined]] in lieu of flour. [[/underlined]] be at the rate of from 25 to 35 lbs to 100 rations.

Issue occasionally a little tobacco to them

They will have been paid & their hogs & c. & c. and have received their Migration Money before they leave this state.

I have requested their head man to make a law prohibiting them from expending their money [[underlined]] en route [[/underlined]] for their new homes. as it will be required by them for an [[underlined]] out-fit [[/underlined]] or rather [[underlined]] in fit [[/underlined]] in their new country in Arkansas.

I will not presume to add any suggestions to one of your experience as to care of these people who are like [[strikethrough]] grown [[/strikethrough]] other Indians, grown children, but it may not be superfluous to add that they are more jealous of interference with their woman than most Indians. and hence the necessity of strict order restrain the soldiers and others.

On or before shipment the General will issue orders in relations to transportation to Arkansas.
