I have not much hope of any general and sensible movement.

The Creek Indian and their agent, here are trying to get hold of the business, and I know too well that the Seminoles will be plundered of all or driven to a final war as soon as they fall into the hands of speculators and contractors.

On July 8 I sent you the talk from the President. The next day he died!

Whether the new authorities can resist the attempts of contractors, remains to be seen.

Inform [[underlined]]Bowlegs [[/underlined]] that the President who has kept peace for them, and who made the favorable "agreement" for them is dead.

Dr Williams,
While in Washington, the suspension of all public duties & charges in the Cabinet, prevented me from attending to my business there. Gen Scott was too much occupied to see me, so I came off to escape the horrible atmosphere of the Capitol

I do not desire to return before the 13th.or 20th. of this month, nor do I suppose that the small

Seminole question can turn up before that time, but to meet contingencies, I desire to say a few words to the Comdg. Genl. in relation to the Seminole troubles

There are, say, 110 warriors in Florida and an aggregate of 450 to 500 men women & children

Of negros there remain 3 men & 3 women & children
On April 12 1850 [[underlined]] Bowlegs [[/underlined]] consented to reduce the boundary, on the North, to a line from the mouth of Pea river (N.E. corner [[Cehtly?]] Harbor) to S. end L. Istokphaga & remainder of boundary as before viz:
Along Istophega break to Kissimmee - down R. to Okeechobee & on to Shark River & continues to 1st point
On July 7 - I sent word to the HeadChief(by order of Pres. Taylor) that so long as the Seminoles remained within that boundary and preserved peace in good faith he (Gen. T.) would not use force to remove them, and they should still have the liberal offer of the govt. held out to them.
Such are the main facts of the case.
Mr. Crawford while Secty of War referred to a proposition of Judge Bryan (Rev Blake) and others to remove them thro' the agency of 2 of 300 Creek chiefs and warriors [[underlined]] by contract. [[/underlined]] This proposition was endorsed by Gen. Triggs as follows
I have read your proposal. If the Indians are removed for the amt. you ask it will be cheap & money well laid out.
D.E.T.

I had no opportunity of giving my opinion to Mr. C., as he had requested me to do, on this proposition
Should [[underlined]] the Plan [[/underlined]]] become advisable, it can be executed by the govt. more honestly and efficiently, than by [[?]] but, at present, I think it would force the Florida Seminole to [[?]].
So long as we leave them alone they will be as quiet as ever Indians were, or, as they have been since Worth's pacification in- committing fewer outrages on the whites than the same [[symbol for number?]] of white people are on each other, [[?]] breaking no Laws, as a nation, towards us.
Lt. T.K. Walbridge a very discreet and sound young officer has charge of the Agency in my absence. There are ample funds at Tampa Bay to pay any coming in to emigrate
