Hon. C.M. Conrad
Sec. of War

Sir,
I respectfully request that the [[? Gr.]] Ind. Dept may be authorised [[sic]] to put up a small building for me at Ft. Myers Fla.

It is important that I should be there all the time & my health requires more shelter than a tent in winter time.

Temporary quarters will be erected at once from which I could select according to my rank, but my position & duties warrant me in asking that quarters may be erected for me immediately & from which I may not be ejected by any officer on duty then who may rank me
Most respectfully
Your obedt serv

Sir, I learn from several sources that you have reported that I told you, at your house- on my way hither (about before 30) that I should give the Indians [[?]] Head to about the citizens of this state.

Such an absurd story seems hardly to deserve contradiction, but under the circumstances I have a right to require from you an explicit denial - which I do so.

Yr early attention to this matter is requested
With due respect

[[entire proceeding passage strikethrough]]
Sir, About Aug 6th. 1850 a white boy was abducted from a Mr. Jesse C. Turner's house or neighborhood in [[? Marrin]] County (This [[?]])

It is feared that the Indians took him, but rumor says that he may have been taken to Key West by his uncle Mr. Wm Stafford - a Mr. Stafford did take a child about same age (8 or 9 yrs) at that time. I believe however that this child is the child of a Mrs. Tucker sister of said Stafford and not the lost boy - who is a son of Stafford's brother's wife.

I am ord by the President to investigate the matter & I therefore have to request that you will take evidence before a proper magistrate at Key West as to who the boy is that Stafford took there in Aug. last or Sept.

If, as I presume it is Mrs. Tucker's child (at Key West) I desire the proof to correct the reports to the contrary.

Will you please to give yr. attention to this matter at yr. earliest convenience & [[?]]
