appointed to relieve me by the Dept. of the Interior, and he is now at Ft. Myers. I did not transfer to him the public funds and property in my possession as I have no official evidence of his appointment, and he stated that he had no authority to receive them.
    As Mr. Blake proposes to be absent from this State until October, I urged him not to open the vexing question of emigration until his return in the Fall, as it would, in my opinion destroy all confidence and peace laws now in force among the Indians and cause the outsiders at once to leave the limits and control of the chiefs and probably lead to outrages during the summer.
    He promised to postpone the subject.

Sir

    I have the honor to inform you that three Indians now designated by the chiefs as the murderers of the boy Daniel Hubbard, were arrested at Ft. Myers on the 17th and I have this day delivered them to Simon [[?]] Esq. J.P. ofc of this county as the chief civil authority in this neighborhood and they are now securely ironed and [[strikethrough]] loged [[/strikethrough]] lodged in jail in Tampa.
    I take this occasion to inform you that the charge of the Florida Indians has been transferred to the Dept. of the Interior, and that Mr. [[underline]] Luther Blake [[/underline]] is now the Agent for them.

    You are hereby relieved from duty in the Indian Dept. in Florida, and will proceed to join your company at Ft. Washington or wherever it may be.
    The U.S. steamer Fashim being about to leave you will travel [[underline]] via [[/underline]] New Orleans -
    I regret that I can not offer you more than my thanks for the manner in which you have performed your duties here and for the great assistance you have rendered in restoring the Indians to their limits & laws and so preserving the peace & quiet of this frontier.

Sir, 

    I have the honor to inform your Excellency that the three Indians given up by the Seminoles as as the murderers of the white boy Daniel Hubbard on 6th of August last, committed suicide in the jail of Tampa, after an unsuccessful attempt to break jail - thus superseding the necessity of any further action in their case.
