[[underlined]] 1848 Aug. 3. [[/underlined]] Arrived at Tampa in Schr Gatzmeer having embarked at Norleans on July 20th.

Maj. Wade Lt. Griffin & Arty Lieut. Clitz on Duty here.

In village I recognize T.P. Kennedy, Culey, Ashley etc & and J.B. Allen at mouth of river. Recd. Mr. Antell Chaplain.

[[underlined]] Aug. 4th [[/underlined]] Learn that certain Indians come in to Tampa to trade & that Kennedy "the trader" opposes it. Other merchants wish them to come in.

[[underlined]] Aug 5th. [[/underlined]] Sunday. News of grant of 160 acres by Congress to town of Tampa. The post should be removed I think.

[[underlined]] Aug 6th. [[/underined]] Meet negro [[underlined]] Sampson [[/underlined]] interpreter.

[[underlined]] Aug 9th.  Cotsa Finico Chepko in [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] Aug 10th. [[/underlined]] Long talk with him about the Indians He wishes to visit the white settlements, but Bowlegs Jones & the trader all oppose lt

[[underlined]] Aug 12th [[/underlined]] I send out Tobacco white bead to Bowlegs with a friendy talk by C.F.Chipko

[[underlined]] Aug 12th [[/underlined]] Visit Halk with the [[underlined]] Spahmulkees [[/underlined]] and they doubt Kennedy's conduct with the Indians. I think he presents any intercourse with their chiefs. for fear of emigration as he has the trade!

[[underlined]] Aug 27th [[/underlined]] Cotsa Chopko  & 2 Mikkosukee men & Truman in to trade. Indians assaulted by Mr Cord

[[underlined]] Sept, 25th [[/underlined]] The Great Gale.

[[underlined]] Oct 12th [[/underlined]] Second Gale - on board Gatzmeer nr Eadden's pt.

[[underlined]] Oct. 24th [[/underlined]] Charter Louis Cavacevich's boat with Lt Griffin & M.C. Brown to visit Charlottes Harbor & then trading store for the purpose of communicating with the Indians.  It is important that since official understanding should be had between the white & red men in Florida, and I may, I hope, be able to open & establish it despite the trader & his employees

[[underlined]] Oct 26th. [[/underlined]] Land at the hading House on main Land at Charlottes Harbor near opposite Hd Pine Island & 12 miles E 1/2 S. from Brea Grande.  We find Darling (John) and Indio (a spaniard) these
