1849 [[underlined]]Jany 1. [[/underlined]]this morning I tell [[underlined]] Assunwah [[/underlined]] that I shall wait no longer, but leave the first fair wind that tomorrow I wish to say a few words to him & leave a message for the chief, when he need not keep his men waiting any more.

This chg. one of A's men, after watching me walk up & down on the beach for some time, approaches and says "I don't know why Sam & Billy are not here, Do you wish to send for them? I think any of our young men would carry your message - and they might come in - Perhaps they don't know you are here."

I replied "No! I have no message to send. I want "no messenger." My manner repelled him & he left.

[[underlined]]1849 Jany 2[[/underlined]] Tuesday. All the Indians in attendance at an early hour! After breakfast I invite them in the store & speak nearly as follows to them.

"I am disappointed in not finding Bowlegs, & Jones here & mortified that, after I have come so far in my feeble health on their invitation to their country, they have not welcomed me, but have sent trifling excuse unworthy of men - nay more, they have sent you to watch me! But let me now attend to [[underlined]] public [[/underlined]] business as far as I can. A little over a month ago I & two other officers came here on business. The head man (Maj. Morris) explained our object to [[underlined]] Nokosee Emathla [[/underlined]] who happened to be here, but I am directed, as I meet your chief, to explain more fully. In their absence I shall say, what I have to say, to you & you can tell others. For a long time there has been no intercourse or confidence between yr. chief & the Comdg officer in Fla. who are your agents. How is either party to ask redress for injuries? Any bad indian or white man may shed blood, and then what can be done for atonement? How are we to know whether it is a [[underlined]] murder [[/underlined]] (by an individual) or the beginning of [[underline]]War [[/underline]](by the nation)? Such a question may occur any day and unless an understanding is had between the chiefs of both sides (red & white) it will soon arise. This wrong. I desire to prevent it
Your chief should have attended to aid me.

It apparently was the style at the time to place a beginning " mark at the start of every line in some quotations. These have not been transcribed as the entire quotation is bracketed between "s.
