[[underlined]] Sept 3rd 1819. [/underlined]] As I was going they asked if I knew what had become of [[underlined]] Chai [/underlined]] & I told them he and Polly were at my house on going aboard again [[underline]] Sampson [[/underlined]] said "Why did'nt you say you didn'nt know where [[underline]] Chai [[/underline]] was? I replied "Because I do know" "Oh!" said he "That is not the way to deal with Indians." "Truth is always good" said I "Sampson" "I'm the end the sunset mode to influence.

[[underlined]] Sept 4th 1849 [[/underlined]] To day Sampson & Felipe both landed with me & the 3 Indians were ready { [[underlined]] Fuss Eneha Kochokkenee - Haje & Oktaiah'tsee Fixico Chee [/underlined]] } The spokesman (Kochokkenee) said we want peace - were shocked at the murder - have been attempting to open communication ever since - are too glad to meet you - have orders to agree with you on time & place to meet our chief in Council & they will do justice and line up all concerned whatever is right etc

I told them Gen Twiggs no one head man & he had come to adjust this late murderous business - that I was here as a mutual friend only & not a Head agent etc Ihey replied that they were only runner - they would carry my talk - they had order to appoint a council with me only but perhaps the chief would meet my General - they could not say - could not exceed their orders - but asked if I would meet them & then I could say what my chief had to say to the Head men - I agreed to do so & after some consultation [[?]] days (Mitta Katska) were agreed on - [[underlined]] 14 days hence [[/underlined]] - or Sept. 18th at old trading house on Charlotte Harbor - I next ask one Indian to return with me to Tampa to show our people their confidence in us & their sincerity etc. After some alarm and a slight appeal they agree that [[underlined]] Fuss Eneha [[/underlined]] nephew-in-law to Bowlegs shall come. He assures a [[?]] air & then ask if he can trade a little for some skins he has with him belonging to another indian who wants some lead & a rifle lock. I, at once, say "Yes, of course", seeing that he is merely [[underlined]] feeling [[/underlined]]. After we get on board the Fox I ask [[underlined]] Sampson [[/underlined]] what he thinks now about saying I knew nothing of [[underlined]] Chai [[/underlined]] where the indian would soon see him at my house? Poor Sampson was confused & could not understand it yet - except as great [[underlined]] cunning [[/underlined]] on my side.
