[[underlined]] Sept. 5. 1849.{[/underlined]] There was great excitement & some anxiety about me at Tampa Bay. Bets were offered that I should see no Indian and [[?]] took one (of 1 doubloon) from Kennedy, and offered to double it, which K declined. [[underlined]] Morris [/underlined]] had expressed his conviction that I should see no one etc.

[[underlined]] Sept 6. 1849 [[/underlined]] Early this morng. I go up to Ft. Brooke in a small boat with [[underlined]] Fuss Eneha [[/underlined]] - General joy except from [[underlined]] Morris [[/underlined]] who [[underlined]] seems [[/underlined] at down altho' assuring me of his confidence in this result - "just as he said always"!!!

[[underlined]] Sept 7. 1849 [[/underlined]] order for War Dept. to Genl Twiggs telling him (21 Aug) to offer $100= a head - delegation is coming & [[underlined]] Col. Spencer will aid [[/underlined]] him!!!  Letters of later date refer the Col. to me exclusively for aid. Gen. Twiggs assures he "shall recommend me as [[underlined]] sole Commissioner [[/underlined]] as the others would be merely nominal - & I should do every thing

[[underlined]] Sept 8. 1849. [[/underlined]] Prepare an estimate of amt. which I think might tempt these indians to go as follow (see app pap.) Maj. M. is startled this [[?]] when I mention that I shall try to remove these Indians by order War Dept.

[[underlined]] Sept. 9. [/underlined]] M. calls & settle Felipe's account $76. and remark that it were an [[underlined]] easy [[/underlined]] job to remove the Indians!   Quesen he more Knave or Fool?  Qusen sake?

[[underlined]] Sept. 13. [/underlined]] Gen. Twiggs says the Indians will go as they are peaceable - I say not - "now beware" 

[[underlined]] Sept. 15th [/underlined]] Off for Ch. Harbor to meet Chief. Gen Twiggs Maj. Mackall, D. Randall, Rains Gibbon on board & [[?]] Twiggs & [[underlined]] Fuss Eneha [[/underlined]].

[[underlined]] Sept. 17th [[/underlined]] Land at trading house with F.E. and William. Meet F.H. Emathla Jones, Tiny & 1 other in wood near by  F.H.E. & his handsome young brother return on board with me.

[[underlined]] Sept. 18th. [[/underlined]] I land with Lt. Gibbon & meet Bowlegs with 3 [[?]] warriors & hold Council. After a generall talk on the difficulty I tell him that [[underlined]] Gen. Twiggs directs me to say [[/underlined]] that [[underlined]] he [[/underlined]] comes to settle this business only - has nothing [[underlined]] else [[/underlined]] to say & after they have given up the murderers he will give them 2 stores & leave the country. [[underlined]] He [[/underlined]] has [[underlined]] nothing [[/underlined]] to say about [[underlined]] unknowns [[/underlined]]. They agree at once to surrender all concerned & came for that purpose.

I then proceeded to say that I was neither Agent nor General and I [[underlined]] desire [[/underlined]] them to let their chief go aboard & say to Gen Twriggs what they had said to me.
