[[underlined]] Sept 25. 1849. [[/underlined]] "But if you have any family I advise you to settle your worldly affairs before starting." After a little more conversation of like calibre "the Colonel" left.

Gen Twiggs - knowing the keenness of the agent for [[underline]] the trade [[/underlined]] - told him, last night, that the sutters would all be Indian traders [[underlined]] en office [[/underlined]]!! Capitol joke!

[[underlined]] Sept 28 [[/underlined]] Mr. Secty. Crawford's letter to Gen. Twiggs says "they [[underlined]] must [[/underlined]] remove" etc and after I have tried peaceable means and they fail - "the hardest fend off."

[[underlined]] Sept 29-30-Oct 1-+- How shall the error of Twiggs now be got over? He promised (unnecessarily) not to try to remove them to Arkansas, and now he has order to do it! Long conferences with Marhall Twiggs about it. Don't like this point It is wished. Marshall & I agree that if war is to come we are borned to return the murderers having get them under false pretences!

[[underlined]] Oct 5. 1869 [[/underlined]] Mail in. Joint letter from War & Home Depts. to Commissioners Spencer and Twiggs - another gives all to Twiggs & thanks me for my services etc-

This outrage of appointing these men Comm & having out me, excites general [[nidegriation?]] & Twiggs speaks louder then any one else

[[underline]] Oct 6. 1849 [[/underlined]]. Twiggs visits me - We discuss the "good faith" question He says "after next visit to Ch Harbor (getting them murderers) he will turn all the Business over to me - or in plain english he will reap what I have served - find seed - and then leave me his crop of thistle (the reach of promise) to gather! Well: I suppose I must do the best I can & only regret that it is not better. These interferences are unavoidable. I make various prepositions which are not quite trusted for setting the matter

Oct. 13. Ordd. to relieve Spencer- He has few backs Setters but [[underlined]] no [[/underlined]] funds!! (He has since turned defaulter - of course (1853))

[[underlined]] Oct. 16. Off for Ch Harbor to receive the prisoners - different opinion, [[underlined]] Gen Twiggs [[/underlined]] thinks that [[underlined]] if [[/underlined]] they give them up they are corned & will go to Arkansas, but he doubts the surrender I assure him that they will give them up & they will [[underlined]] not [[/underlined]] emigrate - [[underlined]] one [[/underlined]] feeling lead to these two result - [[underlined]] courage [[/underlined]] .

[[underlined]] October 17. 1849 [[/underlined]] I land in a small skiff at 3 P.M. with Sampson & William. Our smoke (St. Bt) must have been seen for 3 hours or more - our St boat has been in sight one 1/2 hour or more and my skiff for 20 minutes near shore on over the flatts.
