[[underlined]] Oct 17, 1849.[[/underlined]] As these three men are not of the "peace party" it is most probable that they came for mischief and, slyly, without knowledge of Bowlegs who was near by, but their hearts failed them.

[[underlined]] Bowlegs & Kapiktsa & Harny [[/underlined]] go on board to see Triggs & tell the men that they have 3 prisoners, they haerd of a 4th, & will soon have another (Panukkee). We tell them of reported attack on A. [[unreadable]] on Sept 18th - when we were talking here (Ch Hrbr)

They denie all knowledge of it, but expect [[underlined]] C J Chopko [[/underlined]] [[?]] from that [[?]] and he will know. If it be so they will not deny it, for they can not help these things but will permit or surrender all concerned.

[[underlined]] Oct. 18. 1849 [[/underlined]] I land today & take a package of calico, knifes scissors, bead, tobacco etc designed as a present for [[underlined]] Sam Jones [[underlined]] who has, I learn, come down to see me. in answer to my [[?]] & invitation sent out on Sept. 18th from hence. [[underlined]] Lt Harny [[/underlined]] on the beach In conversation they mention that [[underlined]] Sam Jones [[/underlined]] is in camp nearby and will soon come down to see me. I reply that altho I am sick yet as Sam is so very old & venerable I will go out to meet him if they will show the way. Whereupon [[underlined]] Cotsa [[/underlined]] goes as guide Lt Harny follows with my presents, and after going a short 1/4 mile, we see a row of warriors coming - 60 or 70 with their rifles & white feathers, and there we sit down or a log at a dry spot to await them. As soon as they see us most of the men leave their rifles behind trees & a few only retain theirs. These are the guard. When near, I ask "who is that tall old man in front!" Answer "the old one"
[[underlined]] "Achulattee." [[/underlined]] meaning [[underlined]] "Jones." [[/underlined]] He walked with a staff & was some 6 feet high - spare & lighcol'd - a little bent, but stepp'd out briskly. I arose & met him. He passed his staff to his left hand - took my hand in his right hand & looking up & elevating the staff he exclaimed with feeling "I thank our Great Father above who allows the Sun to shine on you & me [[insert]] to day [[/insert]] as friends and at peace"

I replied "I thank you! I hope [[?]] future meetings may be for less painful business than that [[?]] on hand - shedding of blood -. I am [[?]] to meet you. "Tis well" said he & then turning to the long line behind him he said "Shake hand with him" & the whole line, including prisoners, filed by giving [[?]] each a shake- Indian fashion - one shake.

I then asked him to walk to the old trading house where we could be seated & talk. He said "We will follow you" & the whole party came down to the shore as my "tail."
