Butler John H.

States that in accordance with request he has inquired into the case of [[underlined]] Davis [[/underlined]], — that he has talked with both whites and blacks and all agree that the charges brought against him were without foundation — that he was committed to prison by a magistrate who would allow him no hearing, — that it is reported that this woman and her husband who made the charges were bribed to do so by a white man named [[underlined]] Wm. Wilson [[/underlined]] who wanted to break up the colored schools. — that Davis is now pennyless, and anxious for employement.
