The names of the two leading men are J. W. Dyson and Joseph D. Barnes I then came to New Port in serch of that lumber the Captain left the lumber 15 miles below where the House is to be built and where no cart or wagon can get to it. I am trying to get it rafted and brought up to where it was to have been landed the people are verry poor here and are doing worse in many instances than they were in slavery I never herd of such doings and so numerous that I can only tell you when I see you. I told them that I thought that you would pay the price of getting the lumber up if they would build at once they say that they will do so and get men to raft and bring the lumber up forthwith
