Washington, D.C.
June 7 1889

I hereby certify that the bearer, James H. Brooks, has during the last two years, been a pupil in the Afternoon and Night Schools on I street in this city. He has proved himself a diligent student and is in all respects an excellent man.

I most heartily recommend him to any position which he would be likely to seek as a teacher of a Bureau School. I regard him as qualified to teach, in such a school writing, spelling, reading, as far as through the Third Reader, and the first lessons in Arithmetic and English grammar.
