A principal legal type of land description in the United States, metes-and-bounds descriptions are commonly used wherever survey areas are irregular in size and shape. The land boundaries are run out by courses and distances, and monuments, natural or artificial, are fixed at the corners, or angles. Compass bearings are used to describe the direction of the boundary lines. "Perch" is archaic for "rod" (16 1/2 feet). In plain English the metes for Lot No.1: side 1 is a line 54 degrees south of east, 6 1/2 rods long; side 2 is a line 68 degrees west from south 10 1/2 rods long; side 3 a line 29 degrees north of west 7 1/2 rods long; side 4 is a line north of east 7 6/10 rods long.
