Rev. Jno. Kimball,

My dear Sir,
Two teachers who applied to us to go to Maryland require a few words of explanation from us.

Mrs. Harriet Heminway is a middle aged woman who has taught on her own responsibility a school for small children. She reads well and spells much better than Nathaniel Mitchell. She comes very highly recommended by Mr Alston rector of the St. Thomas Colored Ch., as a most excellent woman whose influence among the Freedpeople will be very valuable. He also says she is very [[underlined]] diffident [[/underlined]] & never does herself justice in an examination.

Mrs Mary Ann Davenger taught for the Episcopal Commission last season, she is recommended by Rev. Mr. Moore, her pastor who was Secy of the Epis. Com. last season. She reads [[underlined]] beautifully [[/underlined]] writes & spells about as well as Mrs Hemingsway.

These women are very highly recommended
