I hope for an answer to my letter about Miss Lyons by tomorrow's mail.

We have an application from Sebastian Paine for an appointment as teacher; he is well recommended by Mr Peterson, Principal of one of our Cold Public Schools, as a Scholar, but has had no other training as a teacher than taking classes at times during the Peterson's absence. He is only 20 yrs of age, a light mulatto, pleasant looking, I judge pleasant tempered, but I fear too young. I tried to show him that I doubted whether he could handle a school of untutored children, unused to such restraints, or to discipline

of any kind that induced self-control, but he was sanguine of success and I promised to consult you. Do you think he could be employed to any degree of advantage? If so he is eager to go; and I said he should have a definite answer before the month closes. Please enable me to give it.
