small quantity of books to Mr Kimball, and among others 4 primary Arithmetics and three third Readers, and in return received [[underlined]] thirty-six [[/underlined]] third readers and not the Arithmetics at all. The readers I [[underlined]] do not want and have no use [[/underlined]] for whatever, as I have put two pupils thus far advanced, and I do not care about receiving my salery in that way.

The maps etc, the rules do not say any thing about, so I suppose that Mr. K. meant for them to be procured the same as books and wrote to him making that inquiry, but have not since heard from him. The people here I know are unable to purchase them, their main and almost entire dependence being their [[underlined]] tobaco [[/underlined]] crop which I not sold till spring, and that is about the only time they have any money, and indeed that can not be called theirs, in seven cases out of ten, the entire price of it is absorbed in procuring winter clothing and shoes, for the many little ones which cluster round each fireside. majority of the people here were liberated by Abriham Lincolns proclimation of emancipation, and though some of them are trying to procure homes, yet you of course know they could not have acumulated much since that time and wages are very very low, a strong able bodied man not getting mor than a common house maide at home. And then again their school building is not completed, and is very [[underlined]] uncomfortable, [[/underlined]] and [[underlined]] I [[/underlined]] as well as a number of pupils, are suffering from severe cold contracted there. The peoples first efforts I think should be directed to finish the building, and until that is done I can not call their attention to any thing else which requires an expenditure of money. The Bureau's travelling agent himself told me this was the darkest part of Calvert one of the darkest counties in the state of Maryland.
