Sir,
Your letter of the 4th inst. was sent home yesterday. I presume our teachers in Maryland have not understood that we would pay their salaries, for at first you remember we engaged to give only $10. and directed them to look to you for the other $10. promised for each month. If you will be kind enough to request them to make application here, we shall be glad to pay them at once.

We have nothing I think to do with the books; the salaries are theirs to do with as they like; if they had sent to us for supplies for the schools we should
