New York 19. June 1868

Rev John Kimball
Supt. of Education
Washington City

Dear Sir,
I write to ask about the Transportation of the Teachers which the N.Y. Br. Freedmen's Union Commission appointed at your request in Maryland. The rule always has been with this Association to pay the Transportation of the teachers it sends out back to this City; that is before the Bureau assisted them in this matter, and not to pay the Transportation of any Teacher appointed in the field back to their homes or to this place. The rule was to leave them where they found them. I am not sure that the Commission in their present, straightened circumstances can do any thing for your appointees, and yet it seemed but right that the subject should be understood. I do not know what your teachers expect as neither of them have written to me on the subject.

Respectfully
Your most obdt Sevt
