Rev. John Kimball,

Dear Sir,
Yours of the 2nd inst. was duly received, and I embrace the opportunity of sending a few words in reply.  My one mutual friend, Mr. Charles K. Brooke.

The closing of the school, at the end of the present month, is doubly regretted by the colored people here, and when I look upon their zeal for education and their sadness, I can but sincerely pity them.

And although my labor here was at first attended with many anxieties and difficulties, yet, little by little, these have been surmounted,
