Emmittsburg Dec. 4th 1869

to the Philadelphia Association

The school was commenced the 23d of last month with thirteen scholars but since then our number has increased to twenty pupils. on my arrival here I found the house not plastered and consequently not in a fit condition to organize the school so I was obliged to wait until it was ready. The school is still increasing. many have promised to come after the holidays. the pupils are delighted to come to school and are trying to learn. I shall commence Night School after the holidays. the house being so lately plastered I was afraid that it might be too damp before then  We have many white friends who sympathize with us and have assisted a great deal about the school and who seem to take great interest in it. all that remains for the Colored people to do is to help themselves and I have no doubt that we
