Thurs. Aug. 11. Another maddening delay on the Panels and the morning went all to tiresome details and preparations for the work.

Ogwa Pi came from San Ildefonso. [[strikethrough]] "Have you [[/strikethrough]] But not to paint. His baby [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] was buried yesterday. "The child I saw at Allan Clark's?" "Oh no, a smaller one only 6 months old, the one you saw is fine" he beamed. "I cannot come and leave my wife, some fellow may run away with her." Ogwa Pi adores his family as all who know him realize, but there is no undue sentimentality among Indians and that is refreshing. Next week he will come and bring his family to stay at the school. Perhaps that will be a needed change for them and for him - much discussion these days about Albert. I would like him to go on with his sandpaintings - even though [[strikethrough]] Mary [[/strikethrough]] W. says he does not know their meaning - he could know - and he has a tradition in a type of abstract that is superb [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] in its right place. His Navajo Woman is coming in for loud praise and blame of which he hears no doubt only the former which whets his desire to paint things he sees. Well - he might develop into a Fra Angelico sort of primitive - I think not a Giotte. I allowed him to paint that woman, to please him and as an experiment. But now where do we go from here?

Fri. Aug 12 - Feast day & Dance at Santa Clara and all the painters gone together.

Sat. Aug. 13. All the painters taking their time waiting for me to come before beginning the charcoal [[strikethrough]] sketching [[/strikethrough]] mapping out [[strikethrough]] even [[/strikethrough]] of the work. But so smiling & delightful - to scold would be hideous and the date for finished work only a week off. *One learns to be patient in the Indian Service -* the governor sends word all the San Ildefonso boys & men are to come home tomorrow.
