[[underlined]] National Portrait Gallery Commission [[/underlined]]

Mr. Ripley reported that at its October 28, 1982 meeting the Commission of the National Portrait Gallery unanimously resolved to recommend that the Board of Regent appoint Senator Edwin Jacob Garn to the Commission. This appointment, following the resignation of Barry Goldwater, would enable the Commission to preserve the tradition of Regents serving in the chair of the Commission (positions held by Senator Barry Goldwater, Senator Robert Morgan, and the late John Nicholas Brown). Further, the Commission unanimously resolved to recommend the appointment of Mr. Robert O. Anderson to the Commission to fill the vacancy created by the death of Andrew Oliver. Mr. Anderson is well known for his sponsorship of the arts through the Atlantic Richfield Company's corporate program and for his support of the humanities through his work at the Aspen Institute. The terms for the new Commissioners would run until 1987 and 1989, respectively.

By statute, appointments to the Commission are made by resolution of the Board of Regents. Accordingly, the following motion was approved:

VOTED that the Board of Regents appoints the Honorable Edwin Jacob Garn to the Commission of the National Portrait Gallery to fill the five years remaining in the un-expired term of the Honorable Barry Goldwater and to serve as Chairman, and that the Board appoints Mr. Robert O. Anderson for a full six-year term.

There follows a [[underlined]] Who's Who [[/underlined]] biographical sketch of Mr. Anderson and a list of the current Commissioners.
