Other categories of employment generally held their percentages of minority and female employment despite the overall lower total Institution  employment  brought about by the Office of Management and Budget controls.

[[underlined]] Hirings and Promotions [[/underlined]]

Overall, the numbers of employees in the Professional category decreased from 596 in FY 1981 to 576 in FY 1982, a loss of 20 or 3.4% (See Figure 1).  The occupation families reflecting the largest number of losses were Science with 8 or 3.1% decrease and Education with 4 or 11.4% decrease.  In contrast, the Engineering/Math category showed the only gain in overall numbers from 62 to 64 persons.  (see figure 2)

A comparison of accessions (see Figure 3) in the Professional occupations indicates that the Institution has increased the percentage of minority men and wormen among its new employees over the 1980-82 period.  The number of accessions for non-minority women decreased significantly.

Figure 4 shows promotions in all occupational categories.  The overall number and percentage of Professional promotions for minorities has increased over the past three years.  Promotions for non-minority women have decreased.
