Fiscal year 1982 is the first year for which actual permanent hiring could be done due to the structure and requirements of the program. Two minority students from the program have been hired: a black male as a marketing specialist and a black female as a radio production assistant. These administrative positions have significant growth potential and are in areas compatible with the students' field of study.

Efforts to extend the Co-op program, particularly into the scientific and curatorial areas have been positive and are continuing. Recruitment for eight Co-op positions identified for the Spring 1983 academic semester is now underway. Four of the eight positions are new: a research assistant in the National Air and Space Museum, a historian in the National Portrait Gallery, a biology trainee and a conservation trainee in the Museum of Natural History. Several organization units have included in their affirmative action goals placement of a Co-op student. Cooperative Education Agreements have been signed with approximately 40 colleges and universities that have high minority and female enrollment and courses of study in the disciplines of Smithsonian professional and administrative occupations.
