[[underlined]] Personnel [[/underlined]]

Since the May 1983 meeting of the Board of Regents there have been a number of significant personnel actions. Two of these were reported in the July 1983 [[underlined]] Regents Newsletter. [[/underlined]] Abram Lerner, Director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden since 1967, has announced his intention to retire in May 1984. A search committee has been formed, the position announced, and the application deadline is September 19, 1983. Following a search and selection process, the Secretary appointed Richard N. Murray to succeed William E. Woolfenden as Director of the Archives of American Art who retired after 19 years as director. Mr. Murray arrives on September 18, 1983.

After consulting with the Regents' Executive Committee, the Secretary appointed John E. Reinhardt Assistant Secretary for History and Art on July 21, 1983. Dr. Reinhardt had served as the Acting Assistant Secretary since January. His varied career has included positions as a professor of English, Foreign Service Officer, Ambassador to Nigeria, Director of the International Communication Agency, and Acting Director of the National Museum of African Art.

On July 1 William H. Klein, Director of the Radiation Biology Laboratory, was named director of the new Smithsonian Environmental Research Center which combines the Laboratory and the Chesapeake Bay Center for Environmental Studies. In addition, John R. Clarke, Assistant to the Treasurer, was appointed Acting Director of Programming and Budget effective July 31, 1983 while Jon E. Yelling attends the Kennedy School of Government under the Webb Fellowship Program.
