Bellwood, April 4th 1868.

Mr. Kimball, I have been endeavoring to meet thy wishes in trying to organize a temperance society at this place, but have been unable to obtain many names, on account of your pledge requiring a promise to "abstain from the use of of tobacco" Will thee be kind enough to inform me if it would be allowable to strike out the objectionable clause in the pledge. I should be greatly obliged if such a departure from your accustomed rules might be granted in our favor, and I think many might be gained from the ranks of the "Whiskey Army"

Thine respectfully,
Sallie B. Howell
