-94- Five day workshop which is part of the Office of Museum Programs' Workshop Series and will spend the remainder of the two-week period at the Smithsonian under the auspices of the Office of Museum Programs' Visiting Professionals program. The workshops provide training and professional development opportunities for Museum professionals from the United States. Workshops are held at the Smithsonian and focus on current theories and practices in the field. Faculty for the workshops are drawn from the Institution's staff with occasional outside experts providing specialized information. Areas of training which may be pursued under the Workshop Series include: museum management, registration methods, conservation awareness, exhibition techniques, public relations, collections management, and other topics as listed in the Workshop Series brochure. Under the Visiting Professionals program Museum professionals have access to Smithsonian collections, staff and facilities on a scheduled basis. The program of study incorporates meetings, tours, demonstrations, visits to laboratories, and observations of specialized techniques and programs in action. This program will be conducted in coordination with the African American Museums Association and is responsive to the suggestion made at the September 20, 1982 meeting of the Board of Regents that the Institution assume a leadership role with regard to training in the museum community.
