Respected Friend
Brevt Brig: Genl C H Howard

I write to request that the balance promised to be paid, on account of lumber &c for the erection of a School house at this place for the col'd People, be forwarded to me, by check or otherwise as best suits thy convenience. Thee will remember the amt was to be $300. on acct of which we have received [[strikethrough]] $ [[/strikethrough]] 7,500 Shingles, and, a door frame, & Window frames &c &c, all of which thee doubtless has a bill for before this time, and the balance was to be paid to me, on account of building lumber which I was to furnish. The school is progressing well with an attendance of from 70 to 80 day Scholars, but the School house cannot be said to be making much progress, on account of the recent cold weather, but the materials for it are accumulating and so soon as the weather will permit, I think it will be pushed ahead.

My best respects to Mr Kimball & lady, & believe me very respectfully thy friend
