Sandy Spring 12th mo: 27th 1868
Esteened Friend

J. Kimbol, On receipt of the form sent me some time since, for the trustees of Sand Spring, Church school for Colͩ people, I called them together, presented the paper, and explained to them as well as I was capable, the desire of the Bureau Agents in the matter, and often much talk on the Subj'ect, they desired me to leave the matter with them for further consideration. My wife & myself then left home for a visit to our friends in Philͣ & returning two weeks afterwards, found much to occupy my attention and did not think of the matter again till last week, when I acertained that they had met and discussed the subject and finally declined to sign it; for the reasons I suppose which were urged when I met them on the subj'ect, viz

That they had signed a paper at the request of Gen Chas Howard of similar import before the school house was commenced, and secondly that the land is held in trust to several white persons in the community for the purposes of a church and school, and they doubt their power to bind the Society in the respect, proposed, having no control of the land or the property further than that conferred by the conference, which does not hold the [[insert]] title to [[/insert]] land

Which much respect for thy wife & self believe me
truly thy friend
