The change left me entirely confined to the school, until the Rev. A. Gladwin, former Supt. of freedmen here, and who has been South establishing schools, and obtaining the detail of soldiers to teach them, called on me and proposed to obtain a like detail for this school, and accordingly went to Col. Holden, and obtained Messrs. West and Shumaker who had been teachers north and who were personally desirous of engaging in such a work. They are both professors of religion and I hope will do such credit to to the position as to merit your approval.

I told you when here that I had written to Dr. Pettijohn, as I had been told that the worst things that had been said about Minnie were in connection with his office, in the building where we were then living. I will extract from his letter, which I could not do on any ground but self-defense. He says:

"If I read your letter right the only charge that Miss Collin makes against Minnie is that she had seen her in my room at

unreasonable hours, say as late as 11 o'clock at night. It is barely possible that she may have seen her at that hour, if she did, she found her helping me to make out my Report Returns as I had her hired for that purpose, and night was the only time that either I or Minnie had for such purpose.  I had a very large return to make out, as well as a difficult one, and I found her fully equal to the task, for which I paid her in all probably $25.00. If ever she was in my office that late, that was the cause of it. But I do not think we ever worked that late — if we did, what business had Miss Collin out of [[underlined]] her [[/underlined]] room at such hours, any more than other people? The fact is, Miss Collin had her fingers in almost every ones business about the house before I left — so much so indeed, that it was difficult to get along with her, & I suppose she has not improved since I came away very much. One thing more — I never
