They were shown off to me to great advantage perhaps on account of my friend Rev. Edwin Johnson whom I was visiting and who introduced me.

I am going to write to Gen Howard asking him to reserve for the Freedmen's Aid Society any public speaking which he may be able or willing to give during the coming year. If you have any view to influence him, I beg you will second me in this. He is too great a man, too good a man, too choice a man to come in with the clap-trap lectures for so much a night. No one in such a ^[[lecture]] course calls out a very choice audience in New Haven at least and when he comes to New Haven again I want
