Dexter ME. Sept. 7" 1866

Brt Brig. Gen. C. H. Howard.

Dear cousin,

I address you to ask a favor. I understand it you know the superintendent of schools for Freedmen in the District of Columbia.

A lady friend of mine here has asked me to aid her in procuring a place as teacher of Freed-men & children, somewhere in the south. I have tried to dissuade her from the scheme, as I would any lady friend, for I know well the discomforts and discouragement which attend such a position, but I do not prevail. Her plan arises from an honest persistent religious sense of duty.

I therefore ask, as a special favor to me that you find her a good place if in your power. You must have no fears of the lady. She is thoroughly in earnest [[??]] work with her whole [[?]].
