subject to removal by the Trustees of the school, except through Gen. Howard's order. This I beleive to be the understanding, implied, if not fully expressed. Otherwise I should be subject to indignity & abuse from the ignorance & passion of certain men who are members of the Board of Trustees. I am on friendly terms with them personally, but am confident I should incur their displeasure, if I do my duty. There has been much trouble lately between them and the other schools, arising from their incapacity, ignorance, & passion. Besides this, there are negro haters among them, who had rather see a poor school, than have a white man teach them. I suppose, of course, I am to be independent of them, so long as I [[strikethrough]] keep [[/strikethrough]] conduct the school properly, and according to law; and, in any case, I can only be reported to General Howard for removal. I speak thus particularly of this, because two good teachers have been turned out of the white schools recently by the trustees, & for no sufficient legal or other cause.
