I consented to continue the work of the Institute under the direction of those who had seized the control of its affairs, although it was with the understanding, expressed in my [[underlined]] written declaration, [[/underlined]] that I considered the new organizations as acting without the authority intended to be conferred on the corporation by the act of Congress, until I learned on the 18th of September that on the 12th of the same month, I had been violently and indolently cut off from all communication with the new organization. The result is that the work of the Institute is left on my hands, and I am providing for it in the manner described above.
