[[underlined]] Footnote Re: South Africa [[/underlined]]

The Institution received just over 200 letters from its constituency voicing opinions about our stance with respect to investments in companies doing business in South Africa. Six letters praised our actions; the rest were less complimentary. We responded to all as per the attached.

It is noteworthy that only seven letters came from Resident Associates and no more than four from Contributing Members. An equally small number were from people preferring not to purchase from the Mail Order Division. By far the greatest number of letters were from subscribers to the Smithsonian Magazine refusing to renew or from persons declining the so-called "soft offer" of three free issues.
