most encouraging for me was the unfolding sense of the discipline that commitment should entail as members of the staff joined in the conversation, and to the feeling for nuance in its application. As you observed, there is a code here, albeit unwritten, of strength and enduring value that sustains the freedom to pursue knowledge. It is at the core of the Institution's strength needing no formal explication, arising as it does from its charter, its traditions, and carried forward by a staff of dedication and integrity.

Altogether our two days in October were ones well spent for me and my colleagues. I look forward with special anticipation to next year, when we come to future directions in biology and what to add to historical and cultural collections in the years ahead.
