[[underlined]] Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Summary [[/underlined]]

This report provides information on the Smithsonian's equal opportunity program. It includes material on the composition and size of the work force (both civil service and trust fund), accessions and promotions, program and facility accessibility for disabled persons, the women's program, upward mobility, outreach program, civil rights compliance, complaints, and minority education programs.

Data collection methods were changed during fiscal year 1985 so that work force composition and personnel action data are collected separately for civil service and trust fund employees. In contract to work force data presented in previous years, therefore, fiscal year 1985 data is presented in a format in which civil service and trust fund data are separate rather than composite. This revised format is consistent with the Institution's affirmative action reporting requirements to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Since data collection and the revised format differ from that of previous reports, comparative analysis of work force composition and of accessions and promotions is not feasible for fiscal year 1985. Fiscal year 1985 will be the base year for subsequent analyses. An additional benefit of the change is that each minority/ethnic/sex group is arrayed and tracked.
