The distribution of the Institution's civil service and trust work force among occupational categories has remained generally stable with a few sizable fluctuations in the trust work force resulting from a moderate increase in employment. Among the several occupational categories, the professional groups show minority and nonminority women improvement or parity with U.S. Labor Force comparative statistics. Other categories of employment showed spotty increases when compared with parity. Minority and nonminority women were hired and received promotions above their representation in the work force.

Program and facility accessibility for disabled persons has shown steady improvement. Complaints of discrimination decreased in fiscal year 1985. Greatly expanded opportunities for training and career development were available to minority students and scholars, and there was concentrated action to develop working relationships with the local universities and the historically Black colleges and universities. In addition, a wide range of special actions to provide information, assistance, and exhibit materials to minority, women's, and disabled persons' groups and organizations continued. Details are provided in the following sections of this report.
