They help to develop the pool of candidates for future jobs at the Smithsonian, other museums and research institutes and give program participants the experience and contacts to help them obtain positions at such organizations. Although the percentage of academic visitors who become Smithsonian staff is not high (5-10 percent), a previous association with the Institution is often key to obtaining a position at the Institution or elsewhere. Special programs include internships and fellowships, cooperative education assignments, federal junior fellowship appointments and awards to minority museum professionals. The Office of Fellowships and Grants (OFG) manages programs which affect every research unit of the Smithsonian. In this context, OFG has developed two programs which are focused on bringing a greater minority presence into the Institution: the Faculty Fellowship and the Minority Internship Programs. The Faculty Fellowships provide opportunities for minority faculty members to conduct research for two to four months in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff, using facilities and collections of the Institution. Internships for minority students, either graduate students or upper division undergraduates, are available for work on research or museum procedure projects developed by the museum or bureau.
