Since the establishment of the minority in fiscal year 1981, 100 internship appointments have been supported in a number of bureaus including National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of American History, Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Decorative Art, National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Anacostia Neighborhood Museum, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of American Art, and Folklife, studying subjects allied to the research and public programs of the Smithsonian. BY joining work in progress for several months under the supervision of a professional staff member, interns gain familiarity with the work of the Smithsonian and specific museum and research skills. Participation has gradually diversifies to include interns from the four protected minority groups. Table 27 indicates the growth of the program and the minority breakdown over the past three fiscal years.
