while four other interns have been employed in temporary positions. Of four former interns who applied to the pre-doctoral fellowship program, one was awarded a fellowship.

The Faculty Fellowship Program supports minority scholars with a Ph.D. and/or holding faculty status through awards for independently conceived research. In order to attract individuals not already committed to Smithsonian pursuits, the faculty fellowship offers more flexibility than the Institution's general fellowships. As of September 1985, a total of 28 faculty have been in residence at the Smithsonian. Table 28 indicates growth of the program and the minority breakdown over the past 3 years.

The broadening effect of these efforts has been immediately evident. Students and Scholars are more aware of Smithsonian programs and potential research opportunities. Interest in these appointments continues to run well ahead of the funding available to support them.
